Tips For the Custodial Parent

Supervised visitation can be challenging for the custodial parent as well, as it can be disruptive to your established routine for caring for yourself and your children’s needs. It is understandable that you will have questions and concerns.

I offer the following suggestions to make the adjustment to supervised visitation easier:

  • Read the court order thoroughly be ensure that you understand its parameters.

  • Prepare you children prior to the visit, letting them know when and where the visits will take place.

  • When you drop your children off, keep your goodbyes brief and positive.

  • Be sure your children are ready at the time of the visit and that they have everything they may need.

  • Arrive on time for drop-offs and pick-ups.

  • Reassure your children with a positive attitude, and encourage them to enjoy their visit.

  • Avoid quizzing your children about the visit, or about the other parent’s activities and relationships,
